The construction of the Burj Khalifa began in January 2004, with the tower rising at a rapid pace over the next six years. The project was designed by the Chicago-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, under the leadership of architect Adrian Smith and structural engineer William F. Baker. Their goal was to create a landmark that would firmly establish Dubai as a global business and tourism center.

Building at such extreme heights presented unprecedented engineering hurdles. The structure relies on a unique hexagonal hub-and-spoke design, known as a buttressed core, which provides lateral stability to prevent the tower from twisting or swaying excessively in high winds. Over 330,000 cubic meters (430,000 cubic yards) of specialized concrete and 39,000 metric tons of structural steel reinforcement were used during construction. To prevent the concrete from setting too quickly in the desert heat, which regularly exceeds 40°C (104°F) during the summer, the building materials were mixed with ice and poured almost entirely at night.
